Signs are Everywhere! How to Identify Meaningful Synchronicities

Wedneday, January 21, 2026 marks one of my favorite moments of the year! Mercury Cazimi! On these days, in the period of time when the Sun and Mercury are so close (17 minutes or less apart) we can easily consider everything a message. Everything including the woman you overhear talking in the grocery store, the teabag that has a message, the song that is in your head as you wake up in the morning, EVERYTHING.

This Mercury Cazimi actually starts while most of us are sleeping, so pay attention to your dreams too!

I realize when I say messages, you might wonder what I mean. To me, messages, signs or synchronicities occur all the time to give us a clue to what is happening or where we need to go next. These synchronicities, can guide us, inspire us, and deepen our understanding of the world around us. Working with this can help you tap into a deeper layer of awareness and make sense of the chaos we are living in! We all have a higher self, and often this is the source behind these experiences.

Synchronicity is a concept introduced by psychologist Carl Jung to describe meaningful coincidences that seem connected by more than just chance. These events often appear when you are facing important decisions, transitions, or moments of personal growth. Learning to recognize and work with these signs can enrich your life and provide clarity when you need it most. Which for me, is all the time it seems. 😉

Synchronicity revolves around the idea that certain experiences and awarenesses carry messages or insights relevant to your current life situation. Think repeated numbers, often called angel numbers, unexpected encounters, or symbolic dreams. I am a huge fan of dreams as a source of guidance, which is partly why I love sleeping so much!

Maybe you keep seeing the number 111 or 222 repeatedly on clocks, receipts, or license plates. These numbers might be inviting you to pay attention to your thoughts or to trust the path you are on. I used to consider the number itself, like was it 4's or 5's, and dive too deepily in. I now just trust that these moments mean I am on my path, and I take it as confirmation I am doing the right thing.

Messages can also come from people! Have you ever met someone or ran into a long lost friend unexpectedly who offers you the advice or detail you need to get through a moment? All the time, people are messengers and especially during Mercury Cazimi days.

Here are some really common types of signs:

  • Numerical patterns: Repeated numbers or sequences that catch your attention

  • Symbolic animals or objects: Seeing the same animal or object multiple times in different contexts (I need something to show up 3 times myself to count, but I run a tight ship)

  • Unexpected encounters: Meeting people who provide guidance or answers or even better, nature encounters.

  • Dreams and visions: Receiving messages through vivid dreams or sudden insight and knowing

  • Songs or phrases: Hearing the same song or phrase repeatedly that resonates with your current situation. Or my favorite, a song you have never heard before that lands randomly that makes all the sense.

Recognizing these signs requires mindfulness and openness to the subtle ways the universe communicates. A tip I use is if it something catches my attention, it is for me. Period.

Are signs and synchronicities real?

Many people wonder if these experiences are genuine or just coincidences we assign meaning to after the fact. The question "Are signs and synchronicities real?" has intrigued scientists, psychologists, and spiritual seekers alike for centuries.

From a psychological perspective, humans are wired to find patterns and meaning in randomness. This tendency, called apophenia, can explain why we notice coincidences and interpret them as significant. However, this does not necessarily diminish the value or impact of synchronicities.

There is also the concept of confirmation bias. According to the interwebs, confirmation bias is the tendency to favor information that supports one's existing beliefs while ignoring or dismissing evidence that contradicts them. I do this a lot. Which is why it's hard to be a skeptical medium, but I am and so here we are.

Many spiritual traditions and personal testimonies suggest that synchronicities are real phenomena that connect us to a larger, interconnected reality. They can serve as guidance, reassurance, or confirmation that you are aligned with your true path. Personally, I have had way too many signs and synchronicities show up and prove themselves for me to believe they don't mean anything.

Whether you view synchronicities as meaningful messages or psychological patterns, the key is how they affect your awareness and decision-making. If recognizing these signs helps you feel more grounded, hopeful, or inspired, they hold practical value in your life. End of story. As I say to my ever doubtful son: "Even if I am wrong, isn't my way more fun?" To this, he mostly rolls his eyes.

How to Recognize Signs in Your Life

Recognizing signs requires you to paying attention to subtle cues, or the subtle zone as I call it. Here are practical steps to help you identify these moments:

  1. Stay present and mindful: Practice mindfulness to notice details you might otherwise overlook. Being present allows you to catch synchronicities as they happen. Get grounded, stay alert to your energy and to your body.

  2. Keep a journal: Write down unusual or repeated events, dreams, animals, numbers, or symbols you encounter. Over time, patterns will definitely emerge. When you look back you will be amazed. This alone gives me great satisfaction because I love this for you already.

  3. Reflect on your emotions: Notice how you feel during these moments. Synchronicities often evoke a sense of excitement or speeding up of energy. It's hard to name the feeling but I think of it as tingling or full body wiggles. Some people get goosebumps. Something is happening when you feel this way.

  4. Ask questions: When you notice a sign, ask yourself what message it might hold. And release all judgement! What is happening in your life that relates to this sign?

  5. Trust your intuition: Your body is a powerful guide in interpreting synchronicities. Trust what resonates with you over time. You may also notice patterns that emerge. At this point in my life, I tune into my body first. Your mind might tell you a story but your body doesn't lie.

  6. Be open to everything: EVERYTHING counts. People, books, billboards, license plates, dreams, songs, nature. The list is endless and if my students ever ask me if something counts, I will always say YES.

So when you are experiencing a sign, what to do?

You identified a sign! Woo hoo! This is a the first step towards a more magical life filled with clues and guidance. So what now? Here are some tips to work with this:

  • Pause and reflect: I always say, close your eyes and take a deep breath. See what comes next. Do you hear anything? Sense anything? How do you feel? Take note.

  • Make conscious choices: Use the insight gained from synchronicities to inform your decisions, but always remember you are in charge. Signs don't make your choices, they can sometimes just be an anchor to know you are in the right place at the right time.

  • Express gratitude: Acknowledge the guidance or message with gratitude, which can deepen your connection to these experiences. I always say when Spirit knows they have your attention, whether its through dreams or another avenue, they will show up more often. Once the door is open, they will keep walking through it.

  • Don't Stop Now: Synchronicities often come in sequences, take attention and see what comes. I am a big fan of needing repeated clues that a thing is trying to get my attention. As always, the body is the best deciding factor. If you sense it, see how your body feels and go with that.

The more you work with signs, glimmers and messages, you can transform them from mere perceived coincidences into useful guideposts and moments of connection and inspiration. Life is meant to be an experience! Don't discount the magic that surrounds us every day. By staying mindful, reflecting on your experiences, and trusting your intuition, you can navigate life with greater clarity and purpose. Embrace the magic of all these moments and let them guide you toward your best life.
